Everything People Ask Us, Answered Honestly

Laser hair removal, Fotona, LipLase and facial balancing — how they work, what they cost, what to expect, and where we'll tell you a treatment isn't right for you.

How laser hair removal works

The mechanism, the machine, and who it does and doesn't work for.

How does laser hair removal actually work?

The laser sends a pulse of light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That light turns into heat, travels down the hair shaft, and damages the follicle that produces it. A damaged follicle either stops producing hair or produces something finer and lighter.

It only works on hair that is actively growing, and only a portion of your hair is in that phase at any one time. That is the entire reason treatment is a series rather than a single visit.

What laser do you use?

The Candela GentleMax Pro, which has been the gold standard in laser hair removal for over twenty years. It carries two wavelengths in one machine — Alexandrite for lighter skin tones and Nd:YAG for deeper ones — so the treatment is matched to your skin rather than the other way around.

Does laser hair removal work on my skin tone?

Almost certainly, yes. Having both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths is what makes the GentleMax Pro suitable across the full range of skin tones — the Nd:YAG in particular is the wavelength used for deeper skin, because it passes the surface pigment and targets the follicle.

The settings are chosen at your in-person assessment, never in advance and never from a photo.

Does it work on blonde, red, grey or white hair?

No — and we would rather say so before you pay than after. The laser finds the hair by its pigment. Grey and white hair has none, and very light blonde or red hair has too little for the laser to target reliably.

For those hairs, electrolysis is the treatment that works, because it targets the follicle directly rather than through pigment. It isn't something we offer, but we will tell you that's what you need.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The accurate term is permanent hair reduction. After a full series most people are left with a fraction of what they started with, and what remains tends to be finer and lighter.

Hormones, medication and time can wake up follicles that were dormant during your series, so occasional touch-up sessions are normal. Anyone promising you a permanently bare result forever is overselling it.

Is it safe? What are the risks?

It is a well-established treatment, but it is not risk-free and you deserve the honest list. The common, expected effects are redness and small bumps around the follicles for a few hours, and a sensation like mild sunburn.

Less common: temporary lightening or darkening of the skin, blistering, or crusting — usually linked to recent sun exposure, a tan, or not following aftercare. Rarely, scarring.

There are also situations where we will not treat you at all: recent antibiotics or steroids, or Accutane (isotretinoin) or immunosuppressants in the past six months. Tell us about medication and recent sun at your consultation — that conversation is what keeps it safe. Full detail on the Pre & Post Instructions page.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a rubber band snapped against the skin, over in a fraction of a second. The GentleMax Pro cools the skin as it fires, which takes most of the sting out.

Sensitive areas — upper lip, bikini, underarm — register more than legs or arms. It is uncomfortable, not painful, and each pulse is over instantly.

How is laser different from waxing and shaving?

Shaving and waxing remove the hair. Laser goes after the follicle that makes it. That is the whole difference: one is maintenance you repeat forever, the other is a finite series with a permanent reduction at the end.

Laser also puts an end to ingrown hairs and the irritation that comes with regrowth, which for many people matters more than the hair itself.

How is laser different from IPL and electrolysis?

IPL is not a laser. It is a broad-spectrum flash of light, which means the energy is scattered across many wavelengths rather than tuned to one. It generally needs more sessions and is less predictable across skin tones.

Electrolysis treats one follicle at a time with a fine probe. It is slow and it is the right answer for white, grey and very light hair, where a laser has nothing to target.

Laser sits in the middle: a single tuned wavelength, large areas covered quickly, and the most efficient option when there is pigment in the hair.

Do at-home laser devices work?

They do something, but not the same thing. Home devices are capped at a fraction of the energy a clinical laser delivers, precisely because they are sold to be used without training. Lower energy means less follicle damage per pass, which means more sessions for a weaker result — and most are IPL rather than true laser.

If a home device is what fits your budget, use it. Just don't expect it to replace a clinical series.

Sessions, timing and results

How long it takes, and why your results look odd halfway through.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Plan for a minimum of six, and know it can run to twelve. Where you land depends on the area, your hair's thickness and colour, and your hormones — facial hair and hormonally driven growth typically need more than legs or underarms.

How far apart are the sessions?

Around every four weeks, without long gaps. The interval is set by your hair's growth cycle, not by convenience — roughly how long it takes for the next batch of follicles to enter the growing phase where the laser can reach them.

Your provider sets your exact spacing at the first visit, based on the area treated and how your hair responds.

What happens if I skip a month?

You don't lose the progress you've made — treated follicles stay treated. What you lose is timing: the follicles that were about to enter their growth phase pass through it untreated, and you effectively wait for them to come round again.

One missed month isn't a disaster. A pattern of them stretches a six-session plan into something much longer.

Why does my hair look patchy after two or three sessions?

Because that is exactly what working looks like. Each session only catches the follicles that happen to be in their growing phase that day. Some patches clear early, others haven't been reached yet.

Patchiness in the middle of a series is a sign of progress, not a sign that it failed. It evens out as the remaining follicles cycle through.

Why does it look like I have MORE hair right after a session?

That is shedding, and it catches almost everyone off guard. Treated hairs are pushed out of the follicle on their way out, and can take up to two weeks to fall. They look like they're growing — they're actually leaving.

Don't wax or pluck them. Let them shed, or shave if they bother you.

When will I actually see results?

Most people notice thinner, slower regrowth after the second or third session. The clear visual difference usually lands somewhere around the fourth to sixth. Individual results vary.

Before and after your session

The short version. The full instructions live on the Pre & Post Instructions page — that page is the one to follow.

Do I need to let the hair grow before my appointment?

No — the opposite. This is the single most common mistake, and it comes from waxing, where you do have to let it grow.

The area must be cleanly shaven within 24 hours of your appointment, and not on the day itself. The laser needs the follicle under the skin, not the hair above it. Hair on the surface absorbs the energy before it gets anywhere useful, and can burn the skin on its way.

We do not shave on site. If the area isn't shaved when you arrive, we have to reschedule you — so this one is worth setting a reminder for.

Why do I have to shave, rather than the technician doing it?

Two reasons. Shaving a day ahead lets any razor irritation settle before the laser touches the skin — shaving on the spot leaves it freshly irritated. And the appointment is booked for the treatment; shaving a large area at the start eats the time you paid for.

Can I wax, pluck or thread between sessions?

No. Waxing, plucking, threading, epilating and depilatory creams all remove the root — and the root is the target. Take it out and there is nothing for the laser to find, so the session is wasted.

Shaving is the only hair removal allowed during a series, and you can shave as often as you like. Stop waxing, plucking and tweezing at least four weeks before a session.

What should I avoid before a session?
  • Sun, tanning beds and self-tanner — for four weeks. Tanned skin raises the risk of a burn and limits the settings we can safely use
  • Waxing, plucking and tweezing — for four weeks
  • Antibiotics and steroids — for four weeks. If you have been on either, tell us before you come in
  • Accutane (isotretinoin) and immunosuppressants — for six months. We cannot treat you inside that window
  • Skin irritants — for two weeks: tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic and salicylic acids, astringents
  • Lotion, deodorant, makeup and perfume on the area — come with clean skin on the day

And tell us what has changed: new medication, recent injectables in the area, pregnancy, or a new skin condition.

Full details on the Pre & Post Instructions page.

What do I do afterwards?
  • No hot showers, sauna, steam room, hot tub or intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours
  • Keep the area out of the sun and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on it
  • Skip skin irritants for a few days — tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic and salicylic acids, astringents
  • Shaving between sessions is fine. Waxing and plucking are not
  • Let the shedding hairs fall out on their own — it can take up to two weeks

Redness and small bumps around the follicles are expected and settle with time. Call us if you notice blistering, or redness or swelling that is excessive or not settling. Full instructions on the Pre & Post Instructions page.

Do I need numbing cream?

Most people don't. The GentleMax Pro's cooling handles most of the discomfort, and sessions are short.

If you know you're sensitive, or you're treating an area like the bikini line for the first time, raise it at your consultation and your provider will tell you what makes sense for you. Don't apply a numbing product on your own without checking with us first.

Areas, privacy and booking

What we treat and what an appointment is actually like.

What areas do you treat?

Twenty-eight areas, plus Full Body.

Face: lip, chin, lower face, full face, eyebrow centre, cheeks, beard line, sideburns.

Body: full Brazilian, partial Brazilian, bikini line, underarm, neck, areola, full back, half back, half arms, full arms, abdomen, stomach strip, chest, shoulder, half legs, full legs, buttocks, feet, hands, and full body.

Every area is listed with its pricing on the price list.

What is a bikini or Brazilian appointment actually like?

Private room, door closed, and you are only uncovered for the part being treated. Your provider will tell you what they're doing before they do it, and you can stop at any point without explaining yourself.

These are among our most-booked areas. Nothing about your appointment is unusual to us.

Can I request a female provider?

Tell us when you book and we will accommodate it wherever the schedule allows. We would rather you ask than sit through an appointment uncomfortable.

How do I book after buying online?

Once your purchase is complete you'll receive an email with a link to book your appointment. Nothing is shipped — you buy the sessions online, then choose your time and come in.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes, and there is no obligation to book anything on the day. It exists so you can find out what a treatment would involve for your skin and your hair before you spend anything. Book a complimentary consultation.

Pricing, packages and policies

What it costs and what happens if plans change.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

It depends entirely on the size of the area. A single session starts at $35 for a small area like the eyebrow centre; larger areas and full-body packages run considerably higher.

Every area and every package is priced openly on the price list — no "call for pricing".

Do you offer package discounts?

Yes. Buying a package of 3 sessions saves 5%, and 6 sessions saves 10%, against the single-session price for the same area.

Since most areas need at least six sessions, the six-session package is usually the honest recommendation rather than the upsell.

Do I pay sales tax?

No. Laser hair removal is not subject to New York State sales tax outside New York City, and we are in Suffern, Rockland County. The price you see is the price you pay.

What is your cancellation and no-show policy?

Your first missed appointment is forgiven. A second no-show carries a $50 fee. After a third, bookings are restricted to same-day availability.

The policy exists because a missed slot is a slot nobody else could take. Give us notice and it is never an issue.

What if I'm running late?

More than 10 minutes late and we may have to shorten or reschedule your session, with a $50 fee. Call us if you're stuck — we will do what the schedule allows.

Are sessions and packages refundable or transferable?

No — sessions and packages are non-refundable and non-transferable, and the booking fee is non-refundable. That is exactly why the consultation is free: use it to be sure before you buy.

Fotona laser treatments

Skin texture, firmness and collagen — a different machine and a different job.

What is Fotona and what does it treat?

Fotona is a laser platform that improves the skin itself rather than adding volume to it. It uses two wavelengths at different depths: one refines the surface — texture, scarring, pigmentation — and one works deeper to stimulate collagen and tighten tissue.

It is used for loose skin, fine lines, sun damage, uneven texture, acne and surgical scars, enlarged pores, and general loss of firmness. More in our full article on Fotona.

How many Fotona sessions do I need?

Most people start with four to six treatments about four weeks apart. A rough guideline some providers use is one treatment per decade of life — four in your 40s, five or six in your 50s.

After the initial series, two to three sessions a year keeps the results. Collagen loss doesn't stop, so neither does maintenance.

Is there downtime with Fotona?

It depends on the intensity. A gentle session may leave you slightly flushed for a day and nothing more — you go back to your routine immediately. A resurfacing or scar-revision session can mean a few days of redness, warmth, swelling or peeling while the skin renews.

You'll be told which one you're having before you commit to it. Preparation matters more than people expect — see the Pre & Post Instructions.

Is Fotona safe for darker skin tones?

Fotona's Nd:YAG wavelength is generally considered suitable across a wide range of skin tones. As with everything here, the settings and the choice of treatment are decided at your in-person assessment.

Should I choose Fotona or injectables?

They do different jobs, and the answer is often both. Injectables address volume and muscle movement. Fotona addresses the quality of the skin — firmness, texture, tone.

Treating skin quality tends to make injectable results look better, because the surface sitting over them is healthier.

LipLase

Lip shape and hydration without filler or needles.

What is LipLase?

A Fotona laser treatment for the lips and the tissue around them. Laser energy stimulates collagen in and around the lip, which plumps from within, tightens surrounding tissue and restores definition to the lip border. No filler, no injections.

The story behind it — including before-and-after photos — is in our article on lip aging.

Why are my lips changing shape as I age?

Mostly because of what is underneath them. As bone density declines in the jaw and midface, the muscle and fat around the mouth lose their scaffolding. Lips spread outward and flatten rather than simply thinning.

It is why lips can look wider and less defined at 45 than at 21, even without much change in volume.

Is LipLase the same as lip filler?

No. Filler adds volume by placing product into the lip. LipLase works with your own tissue and encourages it to rebuild collagen.

They combine well — filler tends to sit better and last longer when the tissue underneath is in good condition. Note that we ask for no filler in the month before a LipLase session.

How many LipLase sessions, and is there downtime?

Typically three sessions about a month apart, then maintenance once or twice a year. Downtime is minimal — lips may feel warm and look slightly fuller or flushed for a short time. Most people go straight back to their day.

Hydration genuinely changes the result on this one: the wavelength is drawn to water. The Pre & Post Instructions set out exactly what to drink in the days before.

Facial balancing and injectables

Treating the face as one structure instead of one feature at a time.

What is facial balancing?

A way of planning treatment rather than a single procedure. The provider assesses the whole face — proportion, bone structure, soft tissue — and treats several areas in relation to one another instead of correcting one feature in isolation. It usually involves dermal filler, sometimes wrinkle relaxers, placed according to that plan.

The full explanation is in The Art of Facial Balancing.

How is it different from just getting filler?

The products can be identical. What differs is the decision behind them. Conventional treatment asks which area to correct. Facial balancing asks how the areas relate to each other, and treats toward that relationship.

Will it be obvious that I've had something done?

That is precisely what the approach is designed to avoid. Results that read as "done" usually come from treating one area heavily while the rest of the face stays where it was.

How many syringes will I need?

There is no honest answer to that before seeing you. You are told the exact plan and the exact price at the consultation, before anything is done. We would rather start with less and build.

How long do filler results last?

Hyaluronic acid filler generally lasts somewhere between six and eighteen months, depending on the product and the area treated. Full results settle in two to three weeks. Individual results vary, and your provider will tell you what to expect for your own plan.

Is there anything I should stop before injectables?

Yes, and it makes a real difference to bruising. In short: no aspirin, NSAIDs or blood-thinning supplements for three days to a week; no alcohol, caffeine or cigarettes for 24 to 48 hours; and no dental work or vaccines within two weeks either side.

Check with your own physician before stopping any prescribed medication. The complete list, for tox, fillers and biostimulators separately, is on the Pre & Post Instructions page.
